In 1995 the UN General Assembly adopted the “World Programme of Action for Youth to the Year 2000 and Beyond” in which the UN Member States recognized that “the imagination, ideals and energies of young women and men are vital for the continuing development of the societies in which they live”. In 1995 and subsequently in 2003 they agreed on altogether 15 priority areas on youth where governments promised to enhance their commitments and directly include young people in the design, implementation and monitoring of youth related policies.

One aspect of this ongoing commitment is the direct involvement of young people in decision making. In many countries several young people are chosen to participate in the deliberations of the General Assembly on youth related issues in the capacity of youth delegates, thus being formally part of their national delegations during the sessions at the UN headquarters in New York. They have the opportunity to speak on behalf of their government in front of the Assembly, negotiate clauses on resolutions concerning youth and contribute to the empowerment of young people in their countries upon return, either as advisers to their government or activists in youth-led NGOs.

Being a youth-led initiative, EuroMUN is the youth’s part of the bargain to monitor progress made in the implementation of the World Programme and participate in the deliberation of matters important to us such as the environment, generational justice, sustainable development and above all peace!
