Model United Nations
In a Model United Nations (MUN), students take on the role of diplomats with the intention to simulate international politics as happening in the United Nations. It allows young people to experience for a few days the complexity and the difficulty of international relations. More specifically, taking part in an MUN allows students to act as ambassadors by representing a specific country in one of the various committees. Examples include the UN General Assembly, the UN Security Council or the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and often other selected forums such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Together, they simulate sessions of their respective committee by focusing on one specific topic that lies within the mandate of the respective committee. In that sense, students prepare by accumulating knowledge about the country they represent and the specific issue at hand. Most importantly, they are asked to actively participate in the simulation by using various diplomatic skills. This involves public speaking, actively debating, problem solving, negotiation and leadership skills. Of course students do not have to be equipped with this entire set of skills. The goal is rather to gain and improve on them respectively. Eventually, the goal is to reach consensus amongst the delegates and to pass a common resolution.
MUN is a simulation as authentic as possible and thus provides valuable insights for all participants about the daily challenges of international politics. Hence, students cannot only experience what it takes to act in a highly politicised environment and what world leaders must take into account, but also gain an insight into current issues of world politics. MUN educates the participants in the sense that they learn how to react flexible to a complex constellation of different interests which are being represented. Coming to terms and compromising goes hand in hand with enforcing positions, allying and influencing others. Since MUN attracts students from all over the world, they engage in dialogue with different cultures and nationalities, therefore extending their social skills. Also, critical thinking, careful listening and communication abilities are further enhanced. Lastly, MUN offers its participants the unique opportunity for intercultural exchange and understanding amongst each other, which is, amongst other factors, facilitated by the social program around the conference.
The goal of MUN is to provide ambitious and interested students of various fields, ranging from politics and international relations to business, law and even health sciences with an idea of how global politics work and with highly useful skills. It stresses cooperation between states as the means to manage increasing globalization rather than war and unilateral actions taken by individual states. The hope and objective is that the participants gain an idea of the incontestable value of international cooperation which will make them a great generation of future world leaders and academics.
By exploring the field of multilateral diplomacy, participants take on the role of ambassadors to engage in a challenging debate over topics that are closely related to issues debated at the UN. This experience is not only highly valuable for anyone wishing to pursue a carrier in international politics but for everyone because he or she is affected by decisions on the international level every single day.
